Best Budapest Tour Guides

Following the River Danube

“We spent two outstanding days touring the countryside in Northern Hungary and then visiting Szentendre and Skanzen in the Budapest area, with Andrew (Andras) Illes of His professionalism and skill in conducting such tours, knowledge of Hungarian history and culture, English and Hungarian fluency, seeing the beautiful countryside in his very comfortable air conditioned car, recommendations of local places to stop for lunch . . . It was all wonderful! Arranging the tour by email in advance was easy, and Andrew was very flexible in tailoring the tour to our particular interests. Andrew added greatly to our visit in Hungary, and allowed us to explore and experience areas beyond Budapest in a relaxed way and within our limited travel time. Definitely a five star experience!” Visited July 2017, Molly and Richard

#1 Day Trip from Budapest:

SZENTENDRE the Village
VISEGRAD the Castle
ESZTERGOM the Cathedral

3 historic towns and beautiful panoramic sections in the hills and forest. Not much driving, lots to see.

On arrival in Szentendre your guide takes you for a walking tour in the artists’ town: Szentendre is like an Italian village with narrow, winding streets, small houses, and unusual history. There is religious diversity in this little town: you find Orthodox and Catholic churches, a Protestant Temple and the smallest Synagogue in Hungary!

Recommended exhibitions: Marguarite Kovacs –  clay statues and figurative pottery, and the Marzipan Museum.

Szentendre can also be visited on its own in a half day tour – see the Handicraft Village Szentendre Tour.

Szentendre Marzipan Museum
Visegrád Castle, Danube bend, day trip from Budapest

After Szentendre in 20 minutes we reach Visegrád Castle. Visegrád was the Hungarian royal seat for 200 years.

On top of a hill, the ruins of the king’s fort and castle offer a great view on the Danube Bend.

Recommended lunch in the enchanted and panoramic Hunter’s Lodge on top of Visegrád Hill. Here, you can try the summer toboggan even in winter, fun for kids!

Then you can snooze 20 minutes in the car, till we reach our last town: Esztergom was Hungary’s first capital! With the largest and most impressive Basilica of Hungary, it is the seat of the Hungarian cardinal.

We can visit the crypt with the tomb of the famous Cardinal Mindszenty, and the gorgeous treasury with astonishing artifacts. We even have a view over the Slovakian border.

At the end we take the shortcut back to Budapest (1 hour, 20 minutes)
