A Cathedral with a town attached!
Esztergom is a small town today, with an old part, the Watertown: little houses, narrow streets right on the river Danube. But it has a rich history: Esztergom was Hungary’s first capital, 1000 years ago! With the biggest and most impressive Basilica of Hungary, it is still seat of the Hungarian cardinal. Vast crypt with the tomb of the famous Cardinal Mindszenty, and gorgeous treasury with astonishing artefacts. (not to miss!) View over the Slovakian border. The renovated royal palace has old stones and stories.
You can cross a bridge over to Slovakia on foot: right leg in Hungary, left leg in Slovakia! Right after the end of the communist times, the biggest car factory of Hungary settled in Esztergom: a huge number of Susuki cars are made here.
