Drive to Godollo in 40 minutes. A wealthy Hungarian landlord had Gödöllő palace built in the 18th century. Later, this glittering Baroque palace was given by the Hungarian State to Habsburg Franz Joseph and Queen Elisabeth for the occasion of their coronation. The Habsburg royal family spent several months in Gödöllő palace every year. It was Queen Elisabeth, Sissi, who specially loved staying in Gödöllő and played a decisive role in Hungarian history. At the 2011 Hungarian EU Presidency, the informal ministerial meetings were held in the Godollo Royal Palace. The visit starts with the huge and beautiful park, then we visit 23 rooms (nearly 1000 sq.m.) which accommodate the interior exhibition. In 20 minutes, we drive over to the farm and Equestrian Park of the Lázár brothers, winners of many carriage driving championships. On arrival, you are welcomed with cheese-scones and fruit brandy. After a horse-pulled coach ride through the peaceful countryside, we visit the World Champion’s Hall on the Lázár family’s carriage driving competitions and winning prizes. Walk through the farmyard and the stables, see the horses, and Hungarian breed animals, like the long-wooled racka sheep, the mangalica pig, (low cholesterol!), the huge grey cattle, poultry, and the Hungarian sheepdog, puli. Then will the Horse Show start. The stars are the Hungarian horsemen: Hungarian horse keeping and riding customs, archery on horseback, the traditional fighting method of the old Hungarian tribes. The main attraction is the Puszta-five: a horseman riding 5 horses in the same time!
In the end a typical Hungarian lunch: a cauldron of Hungarian goulash, custard pie with apricot jam, a glass of white or red wine, mineral water, and a strong espresso coffee. As always in a country restaurant in Hungary, gypsy music is played during lunch.
Another hour ride back to Budapest.
