Let me take you to the second oldest town of Hungary, we’ll visit Pécs, cultural capital of Europe in 2010. After visiting the most beautiful attractions of the city, we’ll drive to the stunning hills of Villány, so that you can taste what is said to be the best Hungarian red wine.Pécs has always been a multicultural city with a history of over two thousand years. I’ll show you the Early Christian Necropolis from the Roman era, Sopiane (the Roman name of Pécs) was the administrative center of the Valeria province and a significant early Christian settlement from the 2nd century. The Christian cemeteries – 16 in total – are listed among UNESCO World Heritage sites.
My favourite Hungarian church is the 11th century Pécs Cathedral, I’ll take you to one of the oldest and most beautiful churches of the country.
The region and most of Hungary was under Ottoman rule from the beginning of the 16th century. Pécs is the richest Hungarian town in Turkish remains. We’ll visit the central Gazi Kasim Turkish mosque, the Minaret, a Turkish Bathhouse and a Mausoleum as well.
We’ll walk around the Baroque old town, filled with little cafés and restaurants with a unique Meditarranean atmosphere and charming cobblestone streets. We’ll see the Zsolnay quarter, the new cultural neighborhood built around the famous factory manufacturing fine and amazing ceramic and porcelain.
We’ll drive to Villány and will stop at one of the most amazing Hungarian winemakers, so that you can taste the best Hungarian red wine.
