Caption on a 100 years wedding anniversary photo:"Dear Grandma and Grandpa,
Thank you for raising Mom and Dad for us. Thank you for taking care of the grandchildren: the 2-years-old Judit, the 8-years-old Éva, and the 10-year-old Laci. We are proud of Grandpa’s brave resistance, and outstanding patriotism in the First World War. And finally thank you for holding the little ones hand as you went together in the gas chambers of Auswitz…"
Of course I am going to show you the second biggest Synagogue in the world! However, we go beyond the tourists’ surface. We will visit a small, living synagogue, and the Jewish Community Centre of Budapest. You will learn why and how young Hungarian jews are searching for their identity. Is there antisemitism in Hungary today? I’ll take you to our living memorial, and you will see the protest of everyday people who don’t let any more pages be torn out of the Book of Hungarian History… and go down to the Shoes Holocaust Memorial, where my family was saved by Roul Wallenberg…
To relax, I invite you to the delicious kosher pastry-shop for a real Flodni! And show you the ruin-bars, flourishing in the Jewish quarter of Budapest. I intend this tour to be a real dialog: what does it mean to be Jewish in Hungary in 2014?
